This year’s discussion will focus on H5 bird flu in Australian dairy cattle: what’s the risk and what should we do to prepare? A new strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 HPAI, or H5 bird flu) is causing widespread mortalities among birds and mammals globally. The virus is spreading rapidly through wild bird migration and has been reported in non-avian species, including dairy cattle in the United States. Australia currently remains the only continent free from this strain.

Dairy Australia, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, has commissioned an independent risk assessment for H5 bird flu in Australian dairy cattle. This session will provide an overview of the key findings and their implications for the Australian dairy industry at both an industry and farm level.

We are delighted to welcome Andy Hancock, Sustainable Animal Care Manager at Dairy Australia, as our keynote speaker. Andy is a dairy veterinarian with extensive experience across clinical practice, academia, industry, and government. In his role at Dairy Australia, he manages the dairy industry’s commitments and targets under the Animal Care Commitment of the Australian Dairy Sustainability Framework. Previously, he served as Principal Veterinary Officer (Cattle) with Agriculture Victoria and held international roles with Zoetis, focusing on ruminant health.

Please note, this event is INVITE ONLY.
